Termite is the world's fastest snapper

The termite is the world's snappiest animal, two entomologists from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute In Panama have discovered. Marc Seid and Jeremy Niven filmed the termite's jaws at 40,000 frames per second, and found that they achieved a speed of 70.4 metres per second - albeit over a distance of only 1.76 millimetres.

Minsa aims to begin potable water, sanitation project by September in Panama

Panamanian national health ministry Minsa will begin works in August or September on a US$39.4mn, five-year project to improve potable water and sanitation services in rural and impoverished urban areas, a Minsa official told BNamericas. The project will be financed with a loan from the World Bank, plus US$8.0mn in counterpart financing from the Panamanian government, said the official.

US testing toothpaste for toxin

US health inspectors are testing imports of toothpaste from China following reports that batches tainted with a toxin have been found in Panama, a US official said Thursday. Doug Arbesfeld, a spokesman for the US Food and Drug Administration, said health inspectors had started checking Chinese toothpaste imports on Wednesday.
