MEF land acquisition
Panama's finance ministry (MEF) has approved the acquisition of land and finance for two water treatment projects in the country, the government announced in a statement.
MEF approved the acquisition of land for the US$43mn first phase of the Panama Canal Authority's (ACP) project to build the Las Mendozas potable water treatment plant in central Panamanian district La Chorrera, the statement read.
More than 30 firms have purchased bidding documents for the project, which the ACP will carry out in conjunction with national water and sewage authority Idaan to treat water from Gatún lake, part of the Panama Canal, BNamericas reported previously.
Works will be financed with a US$17mn credit from Banco Nacional, and are due for completion in December 2008, at which point the plant will treat 40M gallons (152M liters) a day, reaching 60M gallons/day by 2017, previous reports indicated.
In addition, MEF approved a US$161mn soft loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for the second phase of national health ministry Minsa's project to clean up the Panama bay, the government statement announced.
These works will be awarded by year-end in two separate contracts - one for the construction of an interceptor tunnel and another for a wastewater treatment plant and pumping station - and are expected to wrap up in 2011, according to previous reports.
In addition to the JBIC loan, the project will receive US$67mn in local funding.
