Colon Province

75 miles from Panama City, 29 miles from Colon, and 15 minutes away from Portobelo, lies Isla Grande, the biggest island in the area and the best suited to receive visitors.

mapaislagrandeThis natural beauty is ”an imposing mass of exuberant vegetation and palm trees, white beaches and crystal blue waters” is 5 kilometers long and 1½ wide. The luscious beach called La Punta boasts intense turquoise water that is impossible to ignore.

The island underwent three phases before being populated: agriculture, cattle grazing, and coconut plantation, by prominent families since the 1850's. For more than a century, up till today, most of its inhabitants are descendants of enslaved Africans and their mayor source of livelihood is fishing, coconut sale, and tourist-related activities.
